How To Claim A Promise

Walk in God's will for you and take hold of His promises.

January 25, 2025

Dr. Stanley discusses the static we feel in our spirits when we’re not in the will of God. Our entire belief system is based on the promises of God, and we can trust God to be faithful to keep them all. However, many people miss out because they neglect God and don’t take hold of the promises He has made to His children.

Sermon Outline

Taking hold of a promise of God involves more than cherry-picking one we like. In today’s message, Dr. Stanley explains some characteristics of God’s promises and helps us recognize when we can claim them for ourselves.

Key Passage: Hebrews 10:34-36
Supporting Passages:
Psalm 37:4; Psalm 32:8; John 3:16; Romans 10:9; 1 John 5:14-15

It’s deeply unfortunate when children of God don’t appreciate what they have in Him.

“Every single day of our life, we should be grateful for all the promises that God has given.”

How do the promises of Scripture relate to us?

  • Not all the promises in the Bible are meant for us today.

  • We learn a lot about God from the promises He made to men and women in the Old Testament.

  • Only believers can claim the promises of God. However, the promise of salvation is guaranteed to anyone who desires to be saved (Rom. 10:9; John 3:16).

“The promises God has made in Scripture are overwhelming. The books of Psalms and Proverbs are treasures.”

Why does God promise us anything?

  • He loves us (Ps. 32:8; Heb. 13:5).

  • He values the relationship that He shares with each of us (Ps. 37:4).

How can we be certain God will keep His promises?

  • He says He will, and He cannot lie.

The promises of God belong to the people of God. A biblical promise become ours to claim when …

  • The promise fits a personal need God has pledged to fulfill (Ps. 32:8).

  • The context of the scriptural passage allows it (1 John 5:14-15).

  • Fulfilling His promise honors Him.

  • The promise is consistent with His immediate will for our life.

  • We are walking in the will of God.

  • The Holy Spirit confirms it.

  • There is peace in our heart about it.

► “God knows exactly when and how this ought to happen in our life. And He often tests us with waiting.”

When claiming a promise, we are expected to show …

  • Obedience—This means we do what He says.

  • Faith—This means we believe Him.

  • Patience—This means we wait for Him.

After Watching

  • God’s motivation for making and keeping His promises to us isn’t merely legalistic or to satisfy some eternal demand. It’s based in love. Does realizing love is the starting point change your perspective on the Lord and His pledges to you?

  • How has today’s message helped you understand when you can, and cannot, claim a promise?
